Samuel Leiper, in a little monument that will soon be weathered away, is one of my outstanding friends in the Augusta Cemetery.
He was my school teacher in the 7th and 8th Grades and he was the one fellow who instilled in me the idea that I could get a college education even though I didn't have the money to go to college. The thing he put in my mind was simple. If you want to go to college, money or not, there is a way that can be found that will enable you to go. When he got through with me I knew that I was going to college, but I didn't know how.
He was a tough teacher and he would throw soft backed erasers at one who was asleep at the switch. He even kicked a waste paper basket over in front of my desk and told me to pick it up. I picked the paper up!
So I always go to visit Sam each time I am in Augusta Cemetery. Evidently no one else cares about him, but I do.
