Paul Brown's Letter to the Editor
The Evening Independent
Massillon, Ohio
Published June 10, 1936

Paul Brown wrote a Letter to the Editor of the Massillon Evening Independent newspaper. It can be inferred that Paul had written a previous Letter to the Editor that invoked an indignant response from "An Independent Voter." The letter below is Paul's response to "An Independent Voter."

In 1936, there were two Paul E. Browns in Massillon, Ohio -- Paul Edgar Brown and Paul Eugene Brown. Paul Edgar was raised in Augusta and became a teacher. Paul Eugene was raised in Massillon and became the head football coach at Washington High School in Massillon. Paul Eugene moved on to take Ohio State University to its first national championship in 1942 and then coached the Cleveland Browns to three NFL championships before co-founding and coaching the Bengals.

It appears "An Independent Voter" has implied that the reason "Paul E. Brown" is against President Roosevelt's New Deal is because he lives a life of luxury without the struggles of normal people. Paul Edgar Brown, being a teacher, decided "An Independent Voter" needed to be educated.

The Managing Editor of the Massillon Evening Independent newspaper (C. E. Chidester) was so impressed with Paul's letter, he "could not resist the urge" to write Paul to let him know how much he appreciated Paul's letter. He began his letter to Paul by stating it was the first time he "ever wrote to thank a correspondent for his letter."
